The virtual basketball battle has been waging for some time now between Live and 2k. Live had it’s moments on earlier counsels, but as of late, the 2k series has been dominant. Live 09 has revived the EA Sports basketball franchise, but NBA 2k9 still holds the throne. 2k9 has better game-play, graphics, and modes which make it an all around better basketball game.

NBA 2k9 provides a great game-play experience. It makes you feel like you’re playing a real game of basketball. Calling out plays, setting screens, and taking good shots all play a part in this realistic basketball game. Players have unique shots that are similar to their life-like shots, which provide a cool feature. The only negative to this is unique free-throws. Players have different free-throw shooting styles, and until you learn most of them, be prepared to get some offensive rebounds. Game sliders are a great feature as well, providing the option to increase or decrease selected options. Want to make three pointers easier to make? Increase the slider. Want to make players get tired faster? Increase the slider. This allows for great customization that you can tweak around with until you find a layout that’s right for you.

The graphics are breath taking. When people walked by and saw me playing, they thought I was watching an actual basketball game. Player models are sharp, and stadiums look well constructed. There are a few glitches here and there, but not enough to ruin the great experience you obtain from NBA 2k9.

Game modes vary from quick match, where you play an exhibition game; to association mode, where you take control of a team and play out a regular basketball season(s) controlling the operations of the team. You manage trades, contracts, scouting, the draft, free agency, and much, much more. This is my favorite mode due to the tactical decisions it brings upon you. As the Bulls, I traded away some players that were angry they didn’t get enough minutes and replaced them with some one-year contract players. This way I could sign a big-name free agent after the season. Making a move to create a superstar team might sound good, but players might want more playing time than you can give them. This could make your team chemistry lower, bringing your team morale down (which increases or decreases your player ratings).

The online play is great as well. Player rankings help match you with individuals of the same skill level, and most teams are well balanced. The only problem I found with this was people who used the Cavs or Lakers. They always give the ball to Lebron or Kobe, making the game a little less fun to play.

The announcers are decent, but repeat the same saying after a while. This is expected, but would be nice if they spent a little more time in the voice recording room. The music list is primarily unheard of, but has some catchy songs you will find yourself humming after a while.

Overall NBA 2k9 is an excellent basketball game. If you are a fan of the NBA, or just basketball in general, you should go pick this game up. Being that the season is coming to a close, the game is cheaper too.
